The War on Fox News

On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord. On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.

-Obama Inaugural Address, JAN 20,2009

Other news organizations like yours ought not to treat [Fox News like a legitimate news organization.]We’re not going to treat them that way.

-David Axelrod on ABC News, October 19th 2009

The Obama administration says it is attempting to marginalize and isolate Fox News. Even if the channel’s content is biased, isn’t this a monumentally bad idea on every single level?

First of all, the administration comes off petty to all but the most fervent I’m-already-sold-on-you type supporters. The country’s in the midst of a recession, unemployment is intolerably high, the entire Washington establishment has spent the past several weeks wringing its hands over which way to go in the Afghan war, and the President’s front office ventures forth  to smack down.  .  .Glenn Beck and Bill O’Reilly? Come on!

Are less people going to watch the channel because of you do not like it? Fox’s ratings are up 20% this year, so that seems unlikely. Are sponsors going to bolt because of the administration’s constant chastising of the administration? Probably not. But if they do,and  if other democrats refuse to come on the showdue to pressure from the White House, is that a  good thing in this country?

If you are trying to unite the country and increase support for your policies, wouldn’t it be better to send smart people from the front office to defend your policies and decisions on the channel? Most people who watch O’Reilly do not watch Olbermann, so wouldn’t you reach more people, and perhaps change a few minds by defending your complex, life-altering policies there? And if Fox comes off as a bunch of jackasses with your people, they lose anyway. Remember Tucker Carlson and Jon Stewart? Stewart tore Carlson apart, and he wasn’t around much after that, was he?

Hopefully the administration will bury the hatchet, drop its petty grievances and send its best and brightest on Fox’s programs. You cannot unite the country on Rachel Maddow’s and George Stephanopolos’s shows alone! And It is better to use the power of persuasion to sell ideas in this country, than to encourage censorship. Leave that authoritarian message-control garbage to the Castros and Chavezes of the world, and beat your opponents out in the open, and on the air.

Update: Fox is running this clip of  its chief administration antagonist Anita Dunn extolling the virtues of Chairman Mao, responsible for totalitarian rule and millions of deaths during the cultural revolution and great leap forward, which no doubt is helping to sell more fence-sitters on the Administration’s agenda!

The War on Terror is Over!

Predator Strikes on Terrorist Targets: Overseas Contingency Ops NO WAR

This is not WAR anymore!

At least as far as the United States Government is concerned:

The end of the Global War on Terror — or at least the use of that phrase — has been codified at the Pentagon. Reports that the phrase was being retired have been circulating for some time amongst senior administration officials, and this morning speechwriters and other staff were notified via this e-mail to use “Overseas Contingency Operation” instead.

Conversely, Al Qaeda deputy  Ayman al-Zawahiri has not indicated that his organization was adopting a similar, detente-like posture, and abandoning Jihad, suicide attacks, or other terror tactics in favor of some muted overseas contingency operations-type stance. In fact, in his most recent statement, he declared that “Demonstrating against [the actions of the United States and Israel] is not enough; you must engage in jihad.  Strike the American-Zionist Crusade everywhere.”

Osama Bin Laden, for his part, recently exhorted muslims worldwide to travel to Somalia and help establish an Islamic state there:

“I send my appeal to the Muslim Ummah everywhere, and ask them extend a helping hand to our family in Somalia, to meet the needs of those afflicted by famine, and to also expend their energies and wealth to back the Jihad [in it] until it is liberated from the invaders and hypocrites and the state of Islam is set up in it, Allah permitting. Achieving victory there will be easy, Allah willing, if every party does his duty”.

Many muslims worldwide are apparently unaware that the War on Terror is drawing to a close, and many have answered Bin Laden’s request, including at least one American citizen, who committed a suicide bombing attack in Somalia that killed thirty people.

Meanwhile, three Soldiers and an Airmen died in combat contingency operations last week in Afghanistan. And of course, the combat contingency operations involving Predator drone strikes on terrorist targets in Pakistan continue unabated.

So let the Pentagon spokespeople call “it” an overseas contingency operation; in fact, have a spokesman drop a literary reference and state to the world that ‘The United States is conducting an overseas contingency operation; the United States has always been conducting a contingency operation* if it makes the powers that be happy.

But let us hope the government does not forget that there are well funded organizations out there that call what they are planning, training and strategically positioning themselves for something much less innocuous than a contingency operation. And hope that what we meet these individuals with a level of force and effort that could legitimately be called war.

* Orwell, of course.

Which Road Are We On?

serfdom-top

So, which road are we on?

The stimulus has passed both Houses now, with the support of only three Republicans, all in the Senate. The trillion dollar bill, which supposedly no one in Congress took the time to read before voting on, flew through Congress in the fast lane, and will be signed into law next week, presumably after the President returns from his President’s Day holiday in Chicago.

As the stimulus marketing campaign came to a close, some other details about the bill have become clear, and there are many indications that it would have been valuable to discuss the merits of the bill’s specific provisions a bit more, rather than wax poetically about  things like “winter”, and “hardship”.

Changing.gov: The Vanishing Agenda

change

Remember the issues with the changing descriptions of President-elect Obama’s community service program? If you don’t, good luck finding them on the web. The change.gov site has removed the agenda items completely, supposedly for a retooling of the site.

It will be interesting to note, if/when it comes back on line, what was retooled more: the site or the agenda?

Describing the day to day machinations of Winston Smith would have been much easier if Orwell had written 1984 in the age of the internet.
